I went to a yard sale this morning and bought a steam cleaner. The owners told me several times that it worked and they said they rarely used it and that they didn't need it now because, they had hard wood floors.
It doesn't work. It lets out water soaking my rug but, it doesn't suck it back up.
Would you go back to get your money back? Would you give someone their money back, if they came back? Is someones word a guarantee or is this the downfall of yard sales. Are broken items considered "as is".
I found out from a vaccum place that the suction was broken and taht they did make the parts anymore. I really think these people knew it was broken.
I thik I would try going back and confronting them. Tell them you had it checked out by a a vaccuum cleaner store and it was their opinion that it was broken. See what they say? Drop it in their court. Did you pay much for it? Did a sign say "as is"? Or did they say that?

I paid $40 and I asked them 3 times if it worked and the told me that it worked and there was nothing wrong with it.
I ended up going back and they said how do they know I didn't break it. ? I tried it to see if it worked, I couldn't exactly try it on their driveway. It's a steam cleaner so I tried it on my carpet.. They then said their was no guarantee because, it's a garage sale. I told them their word should be a guarantee. They said to take it to Sears where they bought it. I have a funny feeling they knew it was broken and are using the fact that it was a yard sale as an excuse. I would never sell someone a broken product, that's just mot right. I found out from the vaccum guy that they don't make the part anymore too.
It's not like I'm going to go to small claims court to get my money back.
I say BUYER BEWARE!!
I wonder if a local policeman can go back to the house with you to confront the sellers? Are you on friendly terms with any officers? I'd be so ticked off if that happened to me. $40.00 is alot to spend on a broken appliance. How long did you wait til you tried it?
REVENGE: Write a blurb in the people's forum of your local newspaper exposing their bad deed without saying their namebut listing their street and date purchased. Hehehehe - like this;
Buyers, beware during garage sale season for those sellers who try to sell their broken goods and tell you they work and then you find out they don't work after you get home to try them out. Granted, there are those honest sellers who would return your money if an item was inadvertedly misrepresented, but SOME sellers on Willowdale Drive (insert name of street) will sell you their carpet steam cleaner and tell you it works when they know it doesn't and not feel bad making money off you. This person knows who they are. My only satisfaction is writing about this and knowing that karma will come back and bite them in the butt twice as hard! Buyers, beware!

I waited maybe 2 hours later. I went back and they were just packing up.
