What do you think about Garage Sale Permits?

What do you guys think about having to obtain/purchase a permit to have a garage sale? I've posted the rules for having a garage sale in the City of Oklahoma City below for you guys to look at. Think about a similar rule coming to your town/city and be prepared to voice your opinion about fees, frequency, and other restrictions on one of your favorite past times.

Each household can have two garage sales a year with proper permits. (Previously, garage sales had to be spaced at least six months apart, but you may now hold them on consecutive weekends if you wish. You may still hold only two garage sales each year, though. Read further down for more rules about holding garage sales.) Garage sale permits are $7 and are available from the License Division, 420 West Main Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Download a permit application here, or call the License Division at 297-2606 for a "paperless permit." Instead of a paper form, you get a permit number over the phone to post at your sale.

You can also get a permit by mail. Request an application at least two weeks before your sale. We'll mail you an application to fill out. Return it with a check or money order for $7.

If your City utility account is in good standing, the City will just add the charge to your next bill.

Garage sale rules

Garage sale signs and other service signs are not allowed on utility poles, traffic sign poles, medians or any public right-of-way. You can put one sign in front of your house. The sign itself can't be larger than 12 square feet.

You can sell any personal property, but not motor vehicles. You cannot sell new merchandise, consignment items, or resale items.

A single permit is good for three consecutive days. The sale must be held at the address listed on it, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The maximum fine for conducting a sale without a license is $200 plus costs.

Yesterday, Ecommerce Guide called Bonanzle "the best eBay alternative we've seen" in more than four years of doing online marketplace reviews.

Given that Bonanzle just launched a month ago, and is technically still in beta through August, this is a statement that is sure to surprise many. The article cites in evidence of its conclusion a litany of Bonanzle-only features help set it apart from the crowd of other eBay alternatives (real time online interaction, online picture cropping, an intuitive one-page item listing interface, Bonanzas, etc.), as well as the "developed from scratch" approach the site has taken.

We think the premise of this article is a stretch. Not because we don't think Bonanzle is doing fine, but because it's hard to call the site an "eBay alternative" when we don't even have auctions, and when our entire philosophy of "relentless simplicity" means that that we're working toward a different goal than eBay or most eBay alternatives. In building Bonanzle, the inspiration was part Biznik, part Etsy, part Amazon, part Google. eBay didn't offer much in the way of inspiration, so we think that a lot of users are going to visit Bonanzle with eBay or iOffer or bluJay in mind are going to think "what the hell is this?"

And we think they have a valid point. If you do like the feel of an iOffer, or an OnlineAuction.com, you're probably going to not like Bonanzle. If you like what Etsy has done, you're more likely someone who will mesh with what we're trying to build.

If you've been on the fence, you might want to give the site a try. Sellers that set up their store now will be grandfathered in to be able to continue selling for free for six months after all the new users have to pay. -Bill Harding, Founder

Best,
Mark

P.S. OK, one eensy weensy pitch: we import eBay items/feedback and work with Google Checkout

I came across two Star Wars figures made by Kenner in 1984. The figures were Y-Wing Fighter and B-Wing Fighter. Both had original boxes and everything. Paid only $1.50 each. I just sold the Y-Wing fighter today for $49.99. Still waiting on the B-Wing to sell.

Also found a bunch of Ralph Lauren Silver-Plated Picture Frames. Only paid $5 each and looks like they retail for $100+ on Ralph Laurens Website. Getting ready to list these, will keep you guys updated on what I get out of them.

Fred and Betty McAteers, who live in Ocklawaha, arrived at a home they own in Ocala on Monday to find that it had been burglarized. They returned Tuesday and walked around the neighborhood to see if anyone knew anything about the theft. During their walk, they saw their dresser sitting on the front lawn of an apartment building.

They called the police, who charged 22-year-old Branden Mitchell Gardiner with residential burglary and dealing in stolen property. He was being held on a $4,000 bond.

As a seller, other than free space at the sale, aggressive advertising, or knowing that 100s or even 1000s of peoples will have access to your items, what would motivate you to come out and spend your Friday or Saturday at a community sale?
